Sweet Child o' Mine (karaoke)

This was a project from around 1995 for JVC. The had put together a team of musicians in LA to program pop tunes for a JVC karaoke kiosk in Japan. Our job was to reproduce the hit recordings note-for-note using the program Digital Performer, and using only a Roland Sound Canvas general midi synth. No instrument on the recordings were real, yet we were able to do get surprisingly adequate results despite the severe limitations.

It took a bit of ingenuity to do these songs. For instance, the solo at 00:3:34, there needed to be more than one guitar string bending a different amount, so it took at least 2 MIDI tracks to do that. Also, notice that in the real recording, Guns and Roses sped up and slowed down. I did the same rather than make the song sound robotic.
